Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-accessibility

If the box labeled "Show position of the pointer when Control key is
pressed" is checked in the Mouse preferences panel, the Ctrl key on the
keyboard can only be used for showing the position of the mouse and
doesn't work in any applications.

I have a Adesso keyboard model MCK-91.

I am using Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 64 bit.

I replicated the issue by trying with the box checked and unchecked
several times. When the box was checked I was not able to use the Ctrl
key, for example, to switch tabs in Firefox.

I filed this bug report:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...er/+bug/302984

It was marked invalid and closed as a duplicate of this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...nter/+bug/9441

However, they are clearly different issues.

The second bug is marked fixed and was marked fixed before I filed my
bug.

If my bug were fixed, I would not have had any reason to file it in the
first place, which would result in a vortex of invalid logic and a black
hole that would consume the universe.

There does not appear to be a way to change the status of the bug from
"invalid/duplicate" to "no it's not/open."

How do I make fixy?

That doesn't change the fact that I'm experiencing a different issue.

I have the same issue reported by Josh and it is not the same problem of
bug #9441. When I have "Show position of the pointer when Control key is
pressed" checked, some applications ignores the Control key. An example
of an application that do not work well with this option is VirtualBox.
Another one is Eclipse (I can't control select itens in lists). Nautilus
does not seem to have problems with this.

Forgot to add this info:

Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 (32 bits) with latest updates

$ gnome-mouse-properties --version
GNOME gnome-mouse-properties 2.24.0.1

$ uname -a
Linux vs-note 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Fri Dec 19 16:29:52 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

The problem exists since fresh install.

Sorry for flooding this topic, but I made a test here that exposes the
problem. I ran "xev" with and without the option to show the cursor and
the results are interesting. The test was done running xev redirecting
output to a file and I pressed the Control key 5 times in each test.

- Without the "show cursor" option I got 5 KeyPress/KeyRelease events
(see without_show_cursor.txt)

- With the "show cursor" option I got NO KeyPress/KeyRelease events,
instead there are FocusOut/FocusIn/KeymapNotify events (see
with_show_cursor.txt). It seems that the show cursor effect is a window
and it steals the focus from the current window.

I don't see how this cannot be classified as a bug.
